The one question that decides it

Do you want to keep recipes, or stop deciding?

Paprika is a recipe box. You clip a recipe from any site and it strips the page down to ingredients and method. You adjust the quantities; it builds the shopping list. You buy it once and it is yours, with no subscription, ever — which for a lot of people ends the comparison before any feature is discussed.

Mealody never stores a recipe of yours. You describe the household once and it plans up to seven days from its own catalogue, with the shopping list and the prep order that follow.

Where Paprika wins

You own it. One payment per platform, no renewal, no price to change later. Mealody is free today. A one-off purchase is settled for good; free today is not the same promise.

Your recipes, kept properly. Clipping, editing, scaling and a box that is yours. Mealody has no import at all.

It works on the device. iOS, Android, Mac and Windows, downloaded. Mealody is web only and needs a connection.

It plans as far ahead as you like. Daily, weekly or monthly calendars, against Mealody's cap of seven days at a time.

Sixteen languages. Against Mealody's two. Romanian is not on Paprika's list.

Where Mealody is different

It decides. Paprika has a meal planner with daily, weekly and monthly calendars, but it plans what you put into it — it never picks a meal. If the problem in your kitchen is that nobody has chosen, an excellent recipe box does not fix it.

Portions per person. Each household member has an age, a goal and an activity level, so a child and an adult at the same meal get different amounts, and someone vegetarian gets their own version of it. Paprika scales a recipe by number of servings.

Nothing to buy to try it. Free today, no card, the whole app. Paprika is free on Android up to 50 recipes, has a downloadable trial on Windows, and is paid up front on iOS and Mac.

Where they are the same

Both end in a shopping list. Neither shows live supermarket prices.

Pick Paprika if

  • You collect recipes and want them organised and yours.
  • You would rather buy once than subscribe to anything.
  • You want your recipe box on the device, offline.

Pick Mealody if

  • The hard part is deciding what to cook, not storing it.
  • Several people eat from the same meal in different amounts or on different diets.
  • You want to try it without paying or entering a card.

What to do next

How Mealody works is the full fact sheet, limits included. Best meal planning apps for families covers seven apps alphabetically, and what to use instead of Mealime matters if you are on an app that closes on 21 October 2026.

Paprika's prices, free Android tier and language list were checked against its UK App Store and Google Play listings and its own site on 18 September 2026. Its Windows version is priced in dollars, so what you pay depends on the exchange rate and your VAT.

Frequently asked questions

What is the main difference?
Paprika stores and organises recipes you find. Mealody decides what a household eats and works out the portions. Paprika never picks a meal for you; Mealody never stores a recipe of yours.
Which costs less?
Mealody is free today with no card. Paprika's Android version is free up to 50 recipes, without cloud sync; on iOS, Mac and Windows it is a one-off purchase — £4.99, £29.99 and $29.99 — paid once and never again.
Does Paprika have a subscription?
No, and that is the point of it. Each version is bought separately and never renews. If subscription fatigue is what sent you looking, Paprika is the honest answer here.
Can I keep my own recipes in Mealody?
No. Mealody plans from its own catalogue and has no import. If you have a collection you have built over years, Paprika exists precisely for that and will serve you better.
Does either plan for several people at once?
Mealody does: each person in the household has an age, a goal, an activity level and a diet, and gets their own portion of the same meal. Paprika scales a recipe by servings, which is a different job.
Do they work offline?
Paprika is a downloaded app on iOS, Android, Mac and Windows, so your recipe box is on the device. Mealody runs in the browser and needs a connection.
Does either count calories?
Mealody does not: it shows nutrition figures for a meal, sourced from USDA FoodData Central, not estimated, but there is no diary and no daily total to hit. Paprika is built around keeping and cooking recipes, so check its current feature list if tracking is what you need.
What languages do they work in?
Paprika lists sixteen languages; Romanian is not among them. Mealody is in English and Romanian.
